Dorm Room Decoration Ideas
Making your room a part of who you are is vital to settling in to University. One way you can do this is through adding personal touches to it; a certain… je ne sais quoi, to spice up your environment and make a real home away from home.
- FAIRY LIGHTS
Colourful, customisable, and fashionable; fairy lights are a working man’s lava lamp. Their variety, from banana lights through to moons and stars, are impressive to say the least. Cashing out in this area may mean you can get an app based light system where you can change the colours at will; it makes for excellent selfies so you can let out the vlogger inside.
2. PHOTOWALL
Missing your family? No longer with a wall of their ugly mugs. FreePrints is a good app to download to get high quality pictures, easily transfer photos from your gallery into your app and soon enough your room will be covered in nostalgic moments and memorable nights.
3. PLANT DECORATIONS
Fake or real, plants add a natural vibe to a room devoid of all life apart from yourself. From exotic geraniums to quirky grass men, real plants give you that minor responsibility of someone that may one day be an actual fully functioning human being. If you are a little lazy then fake plants are another option… who has time to water things anyway.
4. DOOR MIRROR
Picture this: You wake up, sleep gunk in your eye, hair all over the place, and stained clothes; maybe a cursory moment to realise these issues may allow you to resolve them easily, but a Door Mirror is an excellent way of having a quick final check at the way you look before you open it and enter the real world, maybe it will help you realise that in the night your uni-mates have wondered in drunk and drew a funny moustache and glasses on your face. This happened to a friend… this definitely did not happen to me…
5. JAR GLASSES
Both aesthetically delightful and ergonomically decent, jar glasses are all the rage for both storing solids and drinking fluids. Although the rims may be difficult to clean sometimes, there are a million and one uses for a jar glass. From potting a plant to maintaining a puke point, they are invaluable.

6. INSTRUMENT
“Life is a time for experiencing, and the best forms of expression come in the form of music” (as my Year 6 Drama Teacher put so eloquently) get jazzy with a bass guitar or learn a tear jerker on the keyboard, an instrument tells any guest that you are incredibly cool and interesting, even if you can’t play a thing.
7. FUR BEDSPREAD
England can get cold, annoyingly cold, botheringly cold, and what’s colder than a nice cold cold glass of Jack Daniels, bedspreads at night time. Skip the warm up shakes when entering your slumber zone and instead dive into a relaxation furfest with a Fur Bedspread, although pretty pricey, Fur is always nice (except if you spill Lemonade on it).
8. NO MARK WALL MOUNT
Rule Number 127 on your rental agreement, don’t do anything that damages the walls of the building. Rules are made to be broken and having empty walls just isn’t that much fun so instead of slamming holes in and losing your deposit invest in a no mark wall mount to hang up those beloved paintings.
9. BOTTLE DECOR
Making friends and letting them show off their Bottle Decor is one of my favourite parts of life. Whether that be triangular, square, CIRCULAR (getting technical) or a nice… neat… dodecahedron. All you need is a couple of empty bottles, some sellotape, and the skills of Leonardo Davinci and you too can craft a gift for the gods, or at least, a neat looking thingy.
10. FUR BLANKET
Similar to that of the Fur Bedspread but with more ease of movement; Fur Blankets allow you that extra warmth on top of your douvete or that minor decrease of warmth if going Blanket Solo whilst also adding a touch of contemporary chic to the bed.
Time to really make a room your own, don’t hold back. Moving to a new Uni can be a daunting journey, but really opening yourself up to new things and different ways of expressing yourself is what it’s all about.
