Derby Men’s Basketball 1sts 97-87 Nottingham Trent Men’s Basketball 1sts: Hosts into playoffs with brilliant victory
Derby Men’s Basketball 1st XI won the Men’s Midlands Tier 1 Division with a 97-87 victory over second-place Nottingham Trent. Both teams needed to win the contest to advance to the National playoffs but it was the hosts who were victorious.
In a closely fought contest, the two sides went end to end in front of a packed Sports Hall with the home crowd celebrating the clinching of the league title in style.
The visitors came out the blocks the quickest though as last week’s MVP, Van Olarerin, scored 10 points as Trent were up 22-14 after the first quarter. Derby had Randy Holmes to thank for even being in the game as he scored eight points in the first.
The home side began to kick on at the start of the second quarter. Ronald Oberia got the crowd on their feet as he scored five points in twelve seconds after stealing the ball from the Trent inbound. Derby Coach Dan Watts received a technical foul for his protests to the officials but his team were able to bounce back from their poor start and went on to score 31 points in the second.
Trent’s performance became sloppy early in the third, as they committed six fouls within six minutes leading to 10 points for the hosts. That, combined with their opponents shooting 84% from the line, saw them slip further and further out of the match. Derby’s excellent shooting granted them some breathing space as they head into the fourth quarter with the score 74-62.
Derby, buoyed by a late outpouring of emotion from the visitors, held on and took the score line to 97-87. With the result sending the hosts to the playoffs, Coach Dan Watts expressed his sides need to focus: “take one game at a time as we play good teams in the playoffs.”
Celebrations will be swift and loud, but the focus will be right back on the next game as this hungry team looks for further glory.
