Derby Men’s 5th XI climbed to the top of the league table as they eased past De Montfort Men’s 4th XI with a convincing 3-0 victory.
First-half goals from Dan Garnett and Conor Humphries put the home side ahead before James Wilson made sure of the victory, scoring just after half-time.
Derby were confident going into the game following their win against title contenders, Leicester Men’s 4th XI 3-0 last time out. They also knew of the added pressure that a win would put them top going into the Christmas break.
The first quarter of the game was uneventful, but just before the half an hour mark, some great play down the left wing from Aaron Saxton help set up Dan Garnett who arrived into the box late and was able to get enough on his right-footed effort to poke past the visiting goalkeeper Zarl Berezowy.
The hosts got their second shortly after as a defensive mix up between De Montfort’s central defenders left Conor Humphries through on goal and he was able to find the back of the net.
Surprisingly, De Montfort started the better side in the second period as they kept possession well but their inability to create chances was their downfall.
With little over 30 minutes of the contest, James Wilson put the game to bed for the home side as he broke through on goal and slotted his shot into the bottom left corner.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the result means they remain bottom of the table as they have been unable to turn around their poor form in the league.
For Derby, the 3-0 victory means they will be top at Christmas with their first game back being a trip to Birmingham City University 2nd XI at the end of January.
