Derby Men’s 5th XI 1-4 Birmingham Men’s 2nd XI: Visitors cruise as hosts fail to impress
Words by Alex Dreischmeier.
Derby Men’s 5th XI fell to their first defeat of the season as they lost 4-1 at home to Birmingham’s 2nd XI on Wednesday afternoon.
The scoreline reflected the balance of the match as the visitors created more clear-cut chances. Birmingham dominated the early stages but it was the home side who nearly scored in the 11th minute as Wilson chipped the ball just over the bar following a sloppy defensive error.
They were punished for that miss quarter of an hour later as Cowen hammered a brilliant half volley into the bottom right-hand corner to put the away side in front. That lead was doubled in the 33rd minute as Nkango capitalised on a lapse in concentration to put Birmingham 2-0 up.
However Derby were able to get back into the game on the stroke of half time, pulling a goal back after an ingenious set-piece was finished off by Tompkins. The visitors continued their domination though and in the 61st minute Mubvumba had his shot brilliantly touched onto the post by the home goalkeeper.
Although, the Birmingham forward made sure he would not miss the next one as he rifled a shot into the bottom corner to give his team a commanding 3-1 lead. The tie was finally put to bed and the away side rubbed salt in the wounds late on when Birkata added the fourth and final goal.
Derby Men’s 5th XI will look to bounce back from their first loss of the campaign in the next round of fixtures in a week’s time.
