Derby WiP Art Exhibition
Work in Progress, The University of Derby’s Fine Art Exhibition.
I spoke to a few of the artists, Mollie Taylor, Paige Langley and Aida Slobodniciuc; to get an idea of what we have install at the exhibition.
What is the concept behind your work?
Mollie: My process stems from a series of poems I wrote myself.
Paige: I create work based on personal interests and life events to create a connection with the audience.
Aida: my work focuses on Charles Darwin Theory. How today’s man, who although has undergone multiple transformations, still retains the basic qualities that have led to his evolution.
What medium do you use and how does this work well for your concept?
Mollie: I use acrylic paint and wooden letters on vinyl records.
I use the poems to enhance my physical paintings and the colour choices and the designs relate to how the emotions shown in the poems, the medium works well with this because the wooden letters bring the work to life and add a 3D element to the work.
Aida: I do most of my sketches by photographing people and manipulating them in Photoshop. Then I use acrylic colours and canvas. I was always interested in people, so coming up with this project was natural.
Is there a piece you’re most proud of?
Mollie: It’s called “CRUSH//WELCOME HOME”, it includes letters and being painted on both sides. It was a big challenge to pull off.
Paige: It’s called “Unspoken Truth”, which you can see at the exhibition. It represents something that appears perfect but there’s a hidden truth within.
Any recommendations to see at the show?
Mollie: I’d recommend seeing Jas Lucas who will be performing live on the night and has video work set up for constant viewing!
Paige: I recommend Tom Wilewski’s work as he creates amazingly detailed paintings.
Aida: There is so much artwork by talented artists! Everybody should come!
