Derby Men’s 1st XI 2-0 Liverpool John Moores Men’s 1st XI: McGrath’s Men Cruise into the Next Round
Second-half goals from Karel Tvavoh and Elijah Luka carried Derby into the next round of the BUCS Football Trophy after a dominating performance.
The home side took control of the game early on and hit the post directly from a corner after 15 minutes, Jurek Bouia connected with Luka’s corner and was unlucky to see his towering header go just wide of the far post.
Luka went through on goal towards the end of the half but instead of picking a team-mate out, he opted to shoot from range.
It didn’t take long for Derby to open the scoring in the second half. Junek raced down the left wing and put a low cross in that went all the way through to Tvavoh on the opposite wing where he fired it inside the near post.
Minutes later Junek made the same marauding run down the wing and delivered a low ball right across the edge of the six-yard box but it was a yard or two in front of incoming striker Lukas Balaz who was unable to turn it home.
Liverpool’s best chance of the game came from a scramble inside the penalty area but it ultimately amounted to nothing. A defensive mix up at the back for Derby gave the visitors another chance to equalise but Bouia was on hand to make a composed goal-line clearance moments after.
Luka added Derby’s second goal with half an hour to go. Goalscorer Tvavoh put in a cross and Luka directed his header delicately into the bottom right corner of the Liverpool goal.
Captain Callum Jenkins had the chance to make it three after Jude was brought down in the box by the Liverpool keeper. However, Jenkins couldn’t
When asked about Derby’s future in the cup the manager, John McGrath, said: “A home tie would be ideal as it’s nice to have the students here cheering us along… we don’t fear anybody but we respect everybody but yes I want to win the cup.”
