The Resurrection of the Debating Society
(By Shannon Townsend)

As of September 2018, the University of Derby Debating and Speaking Society is back up and running!
I spent some time talking to the president of the society, Matthew Eyre, to answer some questions you may have about this brand new society.
What is the Debating and Speaking Society all about?
Matthew – Debating and Speaking! Our aim is to encourage both debating and speaking in a neutral environment whilst building your self confidence.
What will I gain from being a member?
Matthew – As a member you will gain access to specialist workshops and talks from guest speakers. Not only will this provide you will some essential skills which will prove invaluable throughout your degree and career, it will also provide you with some great networking opportunities. You will also gain a platform in which you are able to express your opinions in a non – judgmental environment. We are also in the process of organising some social events, which you will gain access to for being a member.
What events will be ran?
Matthew – Well obviously we will be running debates (as the name suggests). But also we will be running workshops where you can improve your skills; be that debating itself, public speaking or research. We also have some social events planned which will be released very soon!
What can other societies do to get involved?
Matthew – As a society, we are really interested in getting involved with other societies, whether that be in actual debates themselves, social events or combined workshops. Not only do we want to get involved with typical societies that would usually be paired with the Debating Society, but any society who would be interested in a partnership. If there are any societies interested in getting involved then please get in touch!
How can I get in touch with the society?
Matthew – The Debating and Speaking Society will have a stall at Freshers Fair which is on Monday 24th September and Tuesday 25th September where you can become a member! In the mean time, if you have any questions, feel free to give us a message on Facebook ‘University of Derby Debating and Speaking Society’ or Twitter @derbyusdebate
