Team Derby Continue Winning Run
Team Derby Men’s Football 5th Xi’s new signing Ross Barnett scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win against DeMontfort University.
It was Barnett’s second hat-trick in as many games for his new team, who seem to be finding some form with two wins, and nine goals, in their last two games.
Barnett started off the romp just ten minutes in when Tom McGrath whipped in an excellent cross to James Wilson, setting up the lethal talisman for a volley inside the penalty area to settle any nerves the team had.
The early goal set the tone for the rest of the half as DMU’s defence couldn’t handle the attack of Derby. The hosts had a lot of chances, most notably when Wilson and Ollie King were both unlucky not to have scored.
But the pressure would prove to pay off as Ieuan Ivett received a beautiful through ball from Barnett. Ivett, one on one with the goalkeeper, calmly slotted the ball away to give Derby a 2-0 lead on the stroke of half-time.
The second half offered more goals, the first coming from DMU, who pulled one back through their midfielder charging into the box and putting a low shot past Ryan Plant. Plant made a few vital saves in the ten minutes prior to the goal that would prove to be much needed.
The deficit was only halved for a couple of minutes until Barnett nabbed his second goal of the game when he perfectly curled the ball into the bottom left corner from all of 30 yards out.
It was then the turn of debutant Nathaniel ‘Flannel’ Kay to get onto the scoresheet. The substitute came on for Joe Lightfoot just a few minutes before he caught the ‘keeper off his line and managed to get the ball into the empty net from outside the box.
Barnett claimed his third goal of the game just before the 70th minute by beating the ‘keeper at his near post.
The last goal would be scored would be for DMU.
