Team Derby Women’s Football 1sts had an excellent first week of the new semester after winning football and futsal fixtures.
On the first #WinningWednesday of 2018, the football team used Alice Hall’s first-minute goal to inspire them to a comfortable 5-0 victory over University of Birmingham 3rds. Headers from Hatty Heaney and Emma Nightingale – the defender’s first for the team – gave Derby a 3-0 lead at half-time, before both Evie Garner and Kate Wright added to the tally with two fine strikes from distance.
Despite missing key players from the lineup, the team were able to consolidate top spot in the league ahead of next week’s massive clash away to Nottingham Trent 2nds.
Saturday saw University of Leicester 1sts come to Derby for the quarter-final of the futsal Conference Cup. Goals from Heather Keith and captain Hannah Barber after Leicester’s opener gave Derby a deserved 2-1 advantage at half-time.
Leicester came back fighting and led 3-2 with just eight minutes remaining, but Barber scored the equaliser before producing a moment of cup magic, finding the winner with less than two seconds left on the clock.
The semi-final of the competition will be played on February 24th, but not before plenty of league fixtures for both the 1st and 2nd teams.
