Women’s Football Week Victory For Team Derby
Team Derby Women’s Football 1sts progressed to the next round of the cup as they come from behind to defeat Lincoln 2nds 4-1.
Hattie Heaney and Millie Elson scored first half goals to ensure Derby turned around a one-goal deficit to lead before the break.
Elson’s effort was spectacular. She struck a venomous shot over from 30 yards out that sailed into the net.
Lincoln had taken the lead after Derby started slowly. Their striker fired low past Faye Davies leaving her with no chance.
Hannah Roberts made a smart goal line clearance which kept Derby in the lead
going into half-time.
Heany scored again after the restart. Her clever finish put Derby two goals in
front. Elson scored her second and Derby’s fourth late on to add to Lincoln’s misery.
Roberts was pleased with the team’s performance. She said: “The first half was a bit shaky as the team was changed a bit. We grew into the game and dominated in the second half.”
Derby’s team was rotated from the previous games. Roberts was impressed with how the players who came into the team played. She said: “We were missing our usual captain but the first years Millie Elson and Kate Wright really stepped up. So did our captain for the day Emma Nightingale.”
Derby Goalkeeper Davies was impressed with the team’s character to come from behind to win. She said: “We won so it shows that the performance was good. We just had a bit of a shaky start.”
