Team Derby’s American Duo Get Off To A Flying Start
University of Derby both outclassed and outscored opponents DeMontfort University as they ran out 85-42 winners in the men’s basketball BUC’s Fixtures.
But despite the final outcome coach Daniel Watts was disappointed with the team’s display in the 1st quarter even with their 6 point lead.
He said: “We didn’t play well, we needed a bit of energy from the bench.
“We got going and the guys turned it up defensively rebounding better which for us
sparks our offence.”
By highlighting a need for his side to maintain performance levels and not allowing the players to become complacent, his team put in a brilliant 2nd quarter performance to reach halftime up by 33.
Star man Daniel Garrett was making his first start since arriving from America on a scholarship and racked up 10 of Derby’s first 20 points, as well as making several steals to help Derby to easy points on the counter.
He further linked up with his fellow American Austin Anderson and the pairing were influential in the stunning 2nd quarter which fired Derby into such a commanding position.
Garrett then went on to make the play of the game with an outstanding block late in the 2nd quarter. As Derby were on a 23-4 run Garrett transitioned on the fastbreak and flew through the paint to block a DeMontfort jump shot – one of many highlights in a dominant display.
