Team Derby Fall Short Against East Midlands Rivals
Team Derby Table Tennis 1sts were beaten 10-7 by local rivals the University of Nottingham.
Spectators in the University of Derby’s sports hall were treated to an especially high standard of play across both tables with the visitors eventually claiming the overall victory.
The hosts went into the all East Midlands encounter looking to build on their victory in the opening round of fixtures, where they overcame Nottingham Trent University 11-6.
However on this occasion some early afternoon setbacks proved to great to overcome, despite batting performances from Jack Bennett and Peter Biza.
The former was involved in a topsy-turvy encounter with Nottingham’s Martin Matuzeuicius, but despite battling hard was defeated marginally 3-2.
Yet despite the defeat, president and captain Bennett was in a positive mood.
He said: “We can take quite a lot from it. The guys have all played well and Nottingham has always been a tough one. So hopefully in the return fixture we can put more pressure on them. We want to push for the top, and promotion.”
Meanwhile across the hall the seconds won by 13-4, with Tom Hunt spearheading the victory winning all three of his individual matches.
