Hate Crime: The Stats
This week will see some important debates occurring at The University of Derby, including ideas such as hate crime, freedom of expression, and many more serious themes. In order to get you thinking about these topics, here at Phantom we’ve produced a few articles designed to do just that! You may have seen a few of these articles already, but with the date drawing nearer we’re back again to give you a few facts to consider.
29: The percentage by which hate crime rose between 15/16 and 16/17.
This was a jump from 62,518 to 80,939 in terms of individual incidents.
The following figures total to more than 100% due to some crimes having several motivating factors.
.,The percentage of race related crimes in 16/17 (62,685).
The percentage of sexual orientation related crimes in 16/17 (9,157).
The percentage of religious related crimes in 16/17 (5,949).
The percentage of disability related crimes (5,558).
The percentage of transgender related crimes (1,248).
These changes can be put down to several factors, including the increased level of reporting of this type of crime. However events can also have an impact, below is a timeline of events, depicting the increase in crimes in relation to them.
Not included in the above statistics, are those regarding hate crime. These are much smaller figures despite being the prevalence of hate being expressed online. I have included them below, for further consideration.
