Futsal Team Get Off To The Perfect Start
Team Derby’s Futsal first team beat Leicester’s DeMontfort University 9-6 in their opening BUCS fixture.
Derby delivered a ruthless first half performance, and eased into an 8-0 half time lead. A hat trick from Rabi Mambonz and goals from Ramez Azizi, Roderik Valko, Ross Williams, Callum Jenkins and Tom McGrath put them in a commanding position, with another half to play.
However, Leicester mounted a valiant comeback scoring three times in the opening 8 minutes of the second half to put pressure on the Derby defence. They added a fourth shortly after after some intricate play, and a fine finish. Derby goalkeeper Johnny Lappert was terrific for Derby, and his saves at vital times kept his team on top despite Leicester’s second half surge.
Derby striker Callum Jenkins sealed the victory with a ferocious stroke across goal which ended any hopes for Leicester of a comeback. Jenkins delivered a MOTM performance, and thoroughly deserved his goal.
Manager Matt Hardy was thrilled with his side’s win, in particular the first half performance.
He said: “I was delighted with the win and the great start to the season. Given the limited amount of time we’ve had together, to put in such a devastating first half performance was unbelievable.”
Hardy hailed his side’s attitude. He said: “It is a really great group of guys, with lots of ability. Our aim is obviously promotion and we have got ourselves off to the perfect start, especially given the fact we’ve only really had three weeks together.”
