The Intu Derby Fashion Competition Returns!
By Anisha Kaur Johal
Following the success of the #IntuFashionSOS spring/summer competition, Intu Derby have recently announced the return of their Face of Fashion campaign, which uses 10 people of a variety of ages from Derbyshire to model the latest fashion trends. Winners will be selected based on their competition entries that can be posted on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) or emailed to email@example.com with the hashtag #intuTrendSOS. The chosen finalists will each receive a full makeover and model an outfit in a professional photo shoot with the images displayed in the Intu Derby centre and on social media, along with a £100 Intu gift card. As a winner of the previous Face of Fashion competition, I will give you an insight into what the process entails…
The competition entry had to be based on a fashion dilemma that you wanted Intu and the professional stylists to resolve. It consisted of writing your fashion dilemma on a piece of paper/whiteboard with the hashtag #IntuFashionSOS, taking a photo/selfie with it and posting it onto social media, or alternatively emailing it to Intu Derby. Intu staff alongside M&S employees and members of SixtyNine Degrees Fashion Magazine selected 10 winners from the entries to be the spring/summer faces of fashion.
Makeover & Photoshoot at Mackney Photography:
A few weeks after announcing the winners, the makeover and photo shoot took place at Mackney Photography Studios in Derby. The staff from Intu Derby, Mackney Studios, stylists, photographers and makeup artists were all very friendly, welcoming and patient as most of us had not modeled before. The stylists had chosen a couple of outfits that resolved our fashion SOS which we tried on and decided which to model. I was lucky to have a photo shoot wearing both, as we could not choose between the two! The first was a navy figure hugging bardot dress with a summery pink floral pattern from Quiz and the second was a navy bardot jumpsuit with delicate lace detail; both outfits were from Quiz and were paired with nude heels from Office. The outfits were not something that I’d usually wear so it was interesting to model both looks. Next was hair and makeup. The stylists advised the makeup artists of the look that they wanted us to display that complimented the outfit.
The photo shoot was a different experience as it was something that I had not done before and a variety of photos were taken from different angles. Props were also incorporated into it in order to resonate with our fashion SOS dilemmas. Natural shots were taken throughout the day of us getting out hair/makeup done, practicing the catwalk and being interviewed.
After the photo shoot we received a gift bag with makeup samples, accessories and Showcase cinema vouchers along with a £100 Intu gift card! We were also interviewed about our experiences of participating in the campaign, out competitor entries and our new look. Segments of these were made into a promotional video, which summarised the success of the day.
Fashion Event at Intu Derby:
A couple of weeks after the final photo shoot images were displayed on Level 2 of Intu Derby opposite Topshop, we were all invited to the fashion event which took place on a weekend in June. At the event, we interacted with the public and were interviewed by stylists about our competition entries, final images, makeover and photo shoot.
Overall, the Intu Face of Fashion competition was a great experience enabling locals to model the new fashion range and get their fashion SOS dilemmas answered. As well as having our photos displayed at the Intu centre, they were featured on social media, in 2 articles in the Derby Telegraph and in a piece in SixtyNine Degrees Fashion Magazine. No previous modelling experience is required; it’s a brilliant opportunity so just go for it!
