Saving Money 101
We know how it is, when you’re loan comes in it’s so exciting. And then you spend it all. Having that amount of cash is something most of us are not used to and as such we’re a bit rubbish at budgeting. Especially when there’s so much to do when you first arrive at uni. That’s why student discount is so important. It’s easy to forget about when you’re paying or in a rush but it will save you so much money it all adds up. Here’s a round up of how to save the most money.
NUS Cards
They’re completely worth buying if you do a lot of in store shopping. Whilst some places will except University ID for discounts, not everywhere does so it’s useful to have a card that will cover everything so you don’t miss out. Alternatively if you’re more of an online shopper the Uni Days app is a free alternative that quite a lot of stores still take if you do decide to go on a shopping spree.
Ask
Not everywhere will exclusively advertise that they are offering student discount. Whilst a lot of places have stickers in their windows but a lot of places simply don’t. That doesn’t meant they don’t offer one though so it’s worth asking, if they can give it you then they will! Ask everywhere, because even though it might only be £1 off your coffee if you buy it everyday that’s £7 a week!
Stack
Not everywhere will allow this but it’s worth giving it a go. If somethings already on a special offer some places do still allow student discount on top. For example the co-op still allow you to have your 10% discount from your NUS on top of offers such as meal deals. Normal discount vouchers don’t usually work like this so if they’ll let you make sure you take advantage.
Don’t get carried away
Don’t assume that the place you’re shopping in will have the best price just because you’ve had your student discount off it. Make sure you shop around and don’t let the discount temptation control you. Especially if you don’t actually need to buy the item.
Double or nothing
Sometimes discounts are doubled. Some shops offer you extra discount for events, for example Intu’s Student night. These events are worth looking out for especially if there is something you need to buy as you can save a lot of money.
Amazon Prime
Amazon offer Prime to students a 6 month free trial and then a discounted rate on a yearly subscription. This is extremely useful for next day delivery if you desperately need a book for a project. Not to mention access to daily deals, student exclusive deals and a variety of other benefits.
