Joining a society is one of the most exciting parts of student life when you start university. It gives you a sense of belonging, and a way to enjoy your favourite activities outside of the classroom with people who enjoy them just as much as you do! The University of Derby definitely has a lot of societies to offer, and Phantom Media is one of them! Whilst we’re not strictly a society we are still part of the Union and it comes with an added bonus. Phantom Media is one of the best ways to embrace your creativeness and express your creative side to your fellow students. Not sure whether you want to join us? Check out my Top 10 reasons why you should join Phantom Media:
You can be part of a friendly community! Everyone who works in Phantom are lovely. They always give you all their time and attention when needed, and will help you out with any queries you may have! You’re not just part of a society, but you become part of a family!
Further your passion for writing!
If writing is something you enjoy, whether it be reviews, political pieces or listicles, you can guarantee there’s a place for you with Phantom Newspaper!
Don’t like writing too much? Well we have something for you too!
If writing isn’t your thing then never fear! There’s also opportunities to join Phantom TV, or Phantom Radio! If you’ve always wanted to get your voice heard, or to be on the big screen then here is your moment to shine.
It’s a wonderful addition to your CV!
Let’s be honest the reason we’re all here at university is to make sure we get a successful job in the future…I mean who doesn’t want money so they can buy hundreds of dogs? Just me? Okay then…Moving on: Phantom is a great way to add an extracurricular activity on your CV but also by having fun at the same time! Employers will love seeing how dedicated you are when you join a society, and also there’s nothing better than seeing your name under an article/video/radio show you just posted let me tell you!
You can make friends (We don’t bite I promise!)
Making friends can be a hard thing, especially if you’re just starting out at university, but being part of an community like this will help you make friends easily! It not only gives you something in common to talk about, but also practicing writing articles, or filming shows can help to improve your confidence too!
Yes there are even Phantom nights out!
Every now and again we love having meetings to discuss upcoming plans for Phantom Media as a whole – but that doesn’t mean we sit in a boring lecture room to discuss it. No! We normally meet at 67 Bridge Street or somewhere similar, and have a couple of drinks while we discuss! I mean we are uni students after all, after every stressful lecture I think we deserve to have a little night out every now and again!
Pablo the Poltergeist! You may have seen him dotted around our social media pages, but we now have our official mascot – Pablo! He is super cute and super fun, and is also actually a tattoo that our very own Steph Compton and our ex sub-editor Serena Dowley got tattooed at the end of last year! If that doesn’t show you how dedicated our members are, I don’t know what will! Pablo needs some love so come and join us to give him some friendship!
Want to get your voice heard? We LOVE student opinions! Is there something you badly want to get off your chest, and that you know other students will want to hear about? Well then you’ve come to the right place. Here at Phantom we absolutely love to hear your thoughts, and if you want to get your voice heard then there’s no better way than through our channels! We’ll make sure what you have to say gets out there!
We’re FREE TO JOIN!
That little bonus we mentioned? You might be thinking, okay this is sounding great but I can’t really afford to be a part of any societies at this moment in time. Lucky for you then joining Phantom Media is completely FREE! Yes you heard right, to have a chance to join a fun and inclusive society, it will cost you nothing other than your time and dedication! We just want you to have fun while you’re part of Phantom, the rest is free!
Most of all…WE HAVE FUN! We love to have fun, and as much as we take it all seriously, we also love to have fun whilst we work! The best examples of this are the videos from last year where we celebrated the end of the year by bringing in goats. I mean come on, there was goats! If you’re part of Phantom Media you can almost guarantee that every day is different, and that you’ll never ever be bored.
