10 Places to Drink
Drinking. Probably one of the best things about going to Universtiy is the amount of this you can do, well for some people anyway. Derby has an immense number of bars, here are just 10 you might want to visit.
1. The Abbey
The Abbey is situated in Darley Abbey, just outside the city centre this is one of Derby’s most beautiful areas. This old fashioned pub is full of history and character. It provides a cheerful welcome and a cheap pint. Perfect if you’re looking for somewhere that’s cosy but affordable.
2. The Blessington Carriage
Everyone’s favourite place for predrinks. The Bless is the full package with good food, good beer, a pool table, and beer gardens. Not to mention a regular quiz night. This place is very popular and if you’ve been it’s easy to see why.
3.67 Bridge Street
This place is run by your students union and as such is perfect for students. With excellent food and drinks, including cocktails, as well as student discount this place really is top notch. It’s locality to halls and it’s 24 hour study area make it ideal for student life.
4. Cosy Club
A little more upmarket the Cosy Club is stunning. With its stylish bar area and incredible dining room, it’s a great place for celebrations. It’s not the cheapest but the food is some of the best and it’s cocktails are to die for. Even the soft drinks here are upscale, we highly recommend you try the pink lemonade they have on offer.
5. The Standing Order
Good old ‘Spoons. Derby has three of them in the city centre so it was only right to include one. The Standing Order is housed in an old Bank and it’s enormous. Contains all the value and variety you’d expect of a Wetherspoons, it’s cheap and cheerful and great for groups. P.S. Curry Clubs on a Thursday if you didn’t already know 😉
6. The Hairy Dog
The Hairy Dog is a mixed bag. It’s an alternative venue but pretty much everyone ends up here at some point during the night. It’s recently undergone a bit of a makeover and now features a lovely cafe upstairs. It still has a bar downstairs though like a proper pub and even hosts gigs in the adjoining building, The Kennel, with a variety of music and entertainment.
7. The Fat Cat Cafe Bar
Fat Cats is very popular. And why wouldn’t it be when they do great student discount and 50% off everything on Tuesdays. The cocktail offering this place has is excellent and the food is delicious. Not to mention it’s outdoor space looks Instagram worthy when lit up.
8. The Flower Pot
The Flower Pot is another excellent pub in terms of its live entertainment. With regular gigs this is the place for you if you’re a music fan. It’s a friendly atmosphere in this place so you’ll feel welcomed straight away. Plus it has its own in house brewery so if you’re an ale person this one might be for you as well.
9. Revolucion De Cuba
Back up market a bit Revolucion De Cuba us a bit more pricey than some of the other bars discussed here. It’s Cuban theme makes it an excellent night out though with regular entertainment and events to match. If you fancy it earlier in the day though the food is incredibly tasty and their lunch offering is good value for money.
How could we not mention Walkabout. This place is everything you’d expect from the Australian themed place. Relatively cheap food and drink, a beer garden and club nights. This place is usually very popular with students so we couldn’t not include it.
These are just 10 of the places to drink Derby has to offer, this list could have been so much longer especially since they’re all very good really. If you’re a bit of a party animal you’ve certainly come to the right city because we’ve got more than enough bars for you to get around. And even if you’re not a drinker, most of our bars have excellent food menus so we still recommend you give some of them a go anyway!
