Top 10 Films of 2017 (So Far!)
Not only has this year been a brilliant year in the world of books, some stand out blockbusters have also been released this year. 2017 has been the year for superheroes and franchises, with additions to older franchises being released almost every month. There has been such a large range of films that it comes as no surprise to hear it was a struggle to only keep to ten. However nonetheless, here are the top ten films of the year so far.
Wonder Woman
DC Comic's leading lady has finally got the breakout film we've always wanted. This film hit the top spot as soon as it was released and has yet to come down. Including hit stars such as Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, Wonder Woman is set to be the highest grossing film of the year, and after seeing the empowering response to the film, it really isn't a surprise to anyone.
Transformers: The Last Knight
The fifth installment in the blockbuster series produced by Michael Bay has once again blown fans away. Still following lead character Cabe (Mark Wahlberg), in his fight to keep faith in the Transformers, The Last Knight is a welcome addition to the franchise. With a more insight depth into the world of the Transformers, this film has become a high point of 2017 in film, from action to romance, this film has it all.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2
After the complete success of the first movie, the Guardians came back this year to save the galaxy. This time following StarLord's long lost father across galaxies, the gang are back together and are just as sarcastic and fun. With fans coming out of the cinema and going straight back in to see it straight after, it really is no surprise that this has done so well at the box office. The gang are back and are here to stay.
Logan
Everyone knew it would be a sad day after Hugh Jackman confirmed he would be retiring from the much loved Wolverine. However his final stand is something to be in awe of; with beautiful scenes, brilliant characters and a story to leave you wanting more, this is definitely one of the best films of the year. With one of the highest grossing box office weekends of any superhero movie, it’s no surprise this film makes this list.
Beauty and the Beast
This live action remake of the 1991 Disney classic of the same name, has well and truly emphasised the true power of Disney. With stars such as Emma Watson and Dan Stevens taking the titular roles, it was sure that the film was in safe hands, and reviews have proved exactly that. Although a few fans have had issues with the remake, the live action remakes have begun, and what a crowd pleaser they are.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Not only did we get a new story in the Marvel Universe, but we also got to see our brand new Spider-Man in action in the new Spider-Man: Homecoming film. Tom Holland nails his performance perfectly, with the perfect amount of sarcasm and desperate need to become an Avenger. Whether you’re a fan of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, or classic Spider-Man, this is a sure-fire winner for everyone, with Tom Holland’s performance impeccable throughout the film.
Fast & Furious 8
After the tragic passing of Paul Walker, the future of the Fast and Furious franchise was unknown until the announcement of this eighth addition. Following on from Brian’s (Paul Walker) departure from the group, Dom (Vin Diesel) and friends continue the heart pounding, life threatening deals they always have done, and once again smash the box office out of the park. It’s very clear to see, no matter how long this franchise continues, the love for these characters lives on in many of us.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Old and new fans alike have once again fallen in love with the quirky yet loveable Captain Jack Sparrow this year, with the release of the fifth movie in the franchise. The film also saw the return of much loved Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and with other past stars which seemingly resurfaced throughout the film, there’s no wonder fans of all ages were rushing to the cinema to see what wily escapades Jack had gotten himself into. A very funny and light-hearted film, fun for the whole family.
Get Out
Named the best horror film of 2017 so far, this heart stopping thriller contains all the best ingredients for a well-made horror; suspense, relatable characters, and an atmosphere creepy enough to make you leave the lights on before you go to sleep. Get Out is the best horror of the year so far, and it doesn’t seem like it’s ready to let go of the title any time soon.
Alien: Covenant
The thrilling sequel to Prometheus, this new addition to the Xenomorph universe was expected to hit the charts, and hasn’t failed. Acting once again as a prequel to the film Alien, this film has proven that Xenomorphs are still up there as one of the most notorious horror villains. Award winning actress Katherine Waterston took main stage, and with her in the reigns it seems the franchise will continue in the near future.
It truly has been a wonderful year for film, and with even more horrors and other anticipated releases lined up for the next half of the year, the cinema boom doesn't seem to be dying down anytime soon. With films such as Thor: Ragnarok, and the remake of IT all ready to be released soon, make sure to get your cinema cards ready, as we're in for a treat this year.
