John McGrath says that his side deserved a win after the Derby University men’s team were beaten by Staffordshire University.
“We were camped in their box for 75% of the game really, we had loads of chances and loads of possession and then they break away get a free kick and score which says it all really, that’s just how football is.
“We thoroughly deserved something out of the game and I do feel really sorry for the boys.” Derby went 1-0 up within one minute through Jack Byrom who scored his second goal in two games. Staffordshire equalised just before the break before they took the lead with 10 minutes to go through their substitute.
McGrath says that his side have a lot that they can take forward from this game despite the result in the end.
“There are loads of positives really, we created chances, we defended really well, I thought our two centre halves were superb”
“We’re getting there, we’re making small steps, we’ve had a difficult start but we’re turning a corner and we look forward to next week.
“We just need to be more clinical in the box. I asked for a reaction from the boys before the game after coming off the back of three heavy defeats but we just need to be more clinical.
“The boys worked their socks off today, they were really good, from the keeper right through to the subs we made, they were excellent
“They’ll be in the changing rooms now gutted, as am I but we look forward to next week and we’ll hopefully score some more goals.”
