Camp America – Summer Job Made Fun
If you mention job and summer in the same sentence, the term fun isn’t the first thought on most people’s minds, yet I have had the best summer of my life through my job, working on a summer camp in America. I’ve had the chance to experience a different culture and meet people all over the world, from Americans to Australians, whilst developing as a person and learning new skills.
The good thing about camps such as Camp America is that everyone can be a part of them. If you’re not so good with children that’s fine, you don’t necessarily have to work with them. Sign up for Campower, where you will get the opportunity to work ‘behind the scenes’. This could include anything from office work to hard labour, housekeeping to grounds keeping. It may be hard work but you will get more time off and better pay.
If you would like to get fully involved in all things camp, there are multiple counsellor roles that need to be filled. Some camps specialise in specific activities, however, the vast majority offer a wide range of departments in which a student can work in, including performing arts, circus, sports, waterfront, digital arts, role-playing and games.
Many of the staff at these camps grew up there and it has been part of their lives for over a decade. They begin as young campers and get so involved and overwhelmed by the community and spirit of camp that they find themselves unwilling to leave and become camp counsellors. It is definitely a lifestyle which many plan to last only one summer, but a large percentage of summer camp staff find themselves back at camp the following year.
The best part about working at a camp is that you can are given an extra month to stay in the United States to travel. It is easy to travel cheaply after your visa has expired. The only thing you have to worry about are your flights.
If you are interested in applying to work at a summer camp then the easiest way to apply is through Camp America. Applications for 2016 are now open and you can apply online at www.campamerica.co.uk.
